Abstract

The capability of a digital inlet simulation program to predict both the performance of the started XB-70 inlet system at free-stream Mach numbers of 2.4 to 2.6 and the dynamic aspects of an inlet unstart at these Mach numbers was analyzed. The simulation-predicted performance was compared with flight measurements, and reasonable agreement was obtained for started and unstarting inlet modes. The agreement between empty-fill (buzz) simulations and flight data was less precise. This was attributed to the need for additional information on the boundary-layer-separation process during this mode of inlet operation. The simulation program was used to determine the reaction of the started inlet over a range of performance levels to free-stream temperature gradients in smooth air and in clear-air turbulence. Atmospheric-temperature variations were found to be nearly as significant as severe turbulence for operation of that type of inlet. Unstart margins for the manually controlled XB-70 inlet in the presence of these disturbances were obtained through use of the simulation program.
